Good News for UK music industry
Figures released by the BPI reveal UK artists accounted for 9.8% of records sold in America in 2010, up 0.2 percentage points from the year before, albeit in a market that is massively contracting. This was in part due to Susan Boyle’s second album The Gift, which became the fifth biggest selling album of the year in the US, shifting more than 1.8m copies, while Sade’s Soldier Of Love sold more than half a million copies in its first week.
The British share of single sales, meanwhile, rose 0.1 percentage points year on year to 6.6% - thanks to Taio Cruz’s hits Break Your Heart and Dynamite, Jay Sean with Down, 2012 (It Ain’t The End) and Do You Remember and La Roux’s Bullet Proof.
BPI CEO Geoff Taylor said the figures demonstrated that Britain could still be enormously proud of its international success. “Our increased share of the US market is down to the extraordinary breadth of our native talent and the efforts made by UK labels in investing and promoting British music around the world.
“This is not just good for exports and our balance of payments, but also helps tourism and strengthens our reputation abroad,” he said, adding it was important to maintain high levels of investment in home grown talent if this success was to continue.ed in the industry with the sole purpose of making money.
